Uptown residents Mary Matalin and James Carville are two of the country's best known political consultants, each with deep ties to the nation's two dominant political parties. They will team together as co-chairs of Super Bowl XLVII.
All along, Jay Cicero wanted the Crescent City's Super Bowl effort to have some political power.
Cicero, president/CEO of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, and the New Orleans Saints were hoping to land political-power couple James Carville and Mary Matalin to make New Orleans' pitch for landing the 2013 Super Bowl to National Football League owners during a league meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., last May.
But the NFL doesn't allow political types in those meetings. So, Cicero and the New Orleans Super Bowl Host Committee had to settle for plan B, naming Carville and Matalin as its co-chairpersons for Super Bowl XLVII in 2013.
"It is very exciting to have them," Cicero said Wednesday after an afternoon news conference featuring Saints owner Tom Benson, Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu and Frank Supovitz, senior vice president of special events for the NFL. "They may be in a better role now than they would have in the pitch. There is a really unique perspective that they bring to the table."
